Saints or Sinners??

While to many, our day to day Peanut Pet Shelter life would seem a sometimes harsh way to live - few personal possessions (even fewer since the robbery!), little or no personal space and a 24/7 round of cleaning, feeding, watering and medicating. However, no-one forced this lifestyle on us. This was a choice. A very personal choice. A choice to follow our hearts. A nightmare for some (and in all honesty, very often for us) but basically we are lucky enough to be following our dream. Few get the chance, many more never form a concrete idea of exactly what their dream is.
Peanut Pet Shelter has given us the opportunity to meet many, many people from all walks of life and many different countries, all with one thing in common. Their love of animals. These people enrich our lives and yet, under other circumstances, perhaps following an altogether different dream, our paths would never have crossed.
These wonderful people are so kind, so generous with their compliments -'What saints you are! What angels for the work you do!', we so often hear. Take a look....see Andy's blushes....see my downcast eyes....how delightfully self-effacingly humble we are....but no, it's not that. What they don't know is - we have a secret.
There are others that don't like us. That's ok, after all, they don't really know us and let's face it, no-one likes everyone. They don't like the work that we do. That's ok too. We're fine with that. They seek to bring the shelter down, with a whisper here and a malicious comment there....an oh so subtle, twisting of the truth....and all in the name of love....of animals (they claim).
They seek to persuade that the saints are really sinners!! But we don't mind, because you see we have a secret.

Do you want to know our secret? Do you? Come closer then and let me whisper in your ear....because you see....our secret is...that actually....we are....ordinary. Just that. No more, no less.
Neither saints nor sinners but perhaps something in between. Our secret is....we are just like you.

What of the rest of the Peanut Pet Shelter team? Those sturdy souls that stand shoulder to shoulder with us through good times and bad. Whose true and honest love for both animals and humans shines forth for all to see....all deliciously, delightfully....ordinary. (Please note at this point that I do not use the word 'normal'. This is because I have just the tiniest suspicion that a streak of insanity runs through all us PPS folk).

There are those who love to be called 'Angel' and revel in their 'sainthood'. We hope it brings them happiness. It's not for us however, for the higher you climb, the thinner the air and the colder it becomes. I have a feeling the summit would prove to be a very chilly and lonely place indeed.

Far better we feel, to bask in the warmth and sunshine provided by you other wonderfully, kind, loving, ordinary folks, who are just like us. Doing the best you can with the resources you have.

Neither saint nor sinner but a follower of dreams.

  1. Very nicely said Jen!! Although, I am having a hard time believing that anyone wishes any ill will of you and Andy and the PPS. I just can't imagine it!

  2. I have to agree with Michelle, very nicely said Jen!

Far better to follow your dream with strength and compassion, than to try to build your dream using lies and rumors as your building blocks. The first shows character, the second a distinct lack of the same. Keep doing just exactly what you're doing, it's a beautiful thing.

  3. Jen, we SO understand what you guys are going through. We've had similar problems, as you know. We recommend that you not spend any time or energy wondering why some of the mean, spiteful people do what they do. We think it's simple jealously on many fronts. But whatever the reason, it's not worth your energy to wonder why or worry about it. Just keep doing what you think is the right thing, and you can't go wrong. You guys are doing a wonderful, amazing job, and that's all that matters.

  4. Jen, I agree wholeheartedly with the above posters. It's hard to believe, and mind-boggling that there are people out there who see you and Andy as anything but the compassionate animal lovers that you are. Stand strong and know that you are surrounded by people who believe in and support your mission and admire you for the way you handle yourselves.

  5. Keep doing what you're doing, you know your hearts are in the right place.
I know it's easier said than done, because I am the type that would lay awake at night worrying and wondering about the negative things but try taking
a deep breath and blow those thoughts away. They really are not worth your time and energy, focus on the positive, amazing job you & the PPS are doing.
    hugs!

  6. I'm sick to death of the gossip, innuendo, and back-biting that I've been hearing lately surrounding the saving of animals in Playa del Carmen. This isn't a competition and I wish everyone would just work together. No one has any right to judge another person's motivation for doing what they do. It is only our own hearts we can know.

    I'm very disappointed.

  7. You do have a secret... you have figured out how to take a simple thought and turn it into a reality. You have pin pointed something you are passionate about and that alone is an accomplishment that most will live without their entire lives.

Through it all, you seem to be living a life that most people can only dream about. You have found your passion and put alot of energy into helping a cause greater than yourself. I can only image how it feels to be able to give so much to something you believe in. Regardless of what your motivation may be, the fact is that you are helping hungry, innocent dogs find the love and care they desperately need. And to top it off, you are encouraging others to join your fight.

I wouldn't call you a sinner or a saint, but definitely someone who has mastered the skill called life! That is something to be proud of!

  8. I don't know you personally, but I think you and Andy and what you do are amazing! I only wish I lived closer so I to could get in on the shelter and help you. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all that you do.
